What is a satoshi? Sats explained in rupees

A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin: 0.00000001 BTC. There are 100,000,000 sats in one Bitcoin. Today 1,000 sats is worth about Rs 236.00 or ₹81.36.

Where the name comes from

Bitcoin was created by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The smallest unit was later named after them. Nothing smaller than one satoshi can be recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain itself.

How to convert sats to rupees

Divide the number of sats by 100,000,000 to get BTC, then multiply by the Bitcoin price in your currency.

Rupees = (sats ÷ 100,000,000) × BTC price in rupees

Example: 250,000 sats is 0.0025 BTC. At Rs 23,599,537.28 per Bitcoin, that is Rs 58,998.84.

Going the other way, divide your rupee amount by the BTC price and multiply by 100,000,000. ₹5,000 buys about 61,454 sats at today's rate.

Why people count in sats

  • Fewer mistakes. 0.00025 BTC and 0.0025 BTC look alike, but one is ten times the other. 25,000 sats and 250,000 sats are easy to tell apart.
  • Whole numbers. Everyday amounts become whole numbers instead of long decimals.
  • Fees. Bitcoin network fees are quoted in sats per virtual byte (sat/vB), so wallet users see sats anyway.

Sats and the Lightning Network

Lightning is a payment layer built on top of Bitcoin for fast, small payments. Lightning wallets usually display balances in sats, and internally they can track amounts down to one thousandth of a satoshi (a millisatoshi). Only whole sats settle on the main Bitcoin blockchain.

Use the sats to PKR converter or the BTC to INR converter for your own amounts.

Frequently asked questions

How many satoshis are in 1 Bitcoin?

100,000,000 (one hundred million).

Can I buy just a few sats?

Yes. You can buy any amount above your exchange's minimum order. Very small purchases lose a larger share to fixed fees.

Is "sats" an official unit?

It is not a separate coin or ticker, but it is the standard name for the smallest Bitcoin unit and is used by most wallets.
