Why the USDT P2P rate in Pakistan differs from the dollar rate

USDT is meant to equal one US dollar, yet P2P sellers in Pakistan usually charge more rupees for it than a dollar costs. The market reference today is Rs 278.08. Here is where the gap comes from and how to measure it.

Why the P2P rate is usually higher

  1. Demand for a digital dollar. Freelancers, savers and traders want dollar value they can hold and move online. That demand pushes the rupee price of USDT up.
  2. Payment risk. Sellers accept bank transfers and mobile wallet payments that can be reversed or frozen in disputes. They price that risk in.
  3. Seller margin. P2P sellers are traders who buy low and sell high.
  4. Limited supply. There is no official channel that sells USDT for rupees at the interbank rate, so the P2P market sets its own price.

How to calculate the premium

Premium % = (P2P rate ÷ market rate − 1) × 100

Example with round numbers: if a seller asks Rs 286 per USDT and the market reference is Rs 278, the premium is (286 ÷ 278 − 1) × 100 ≈ 2.9%. On 1,000 USDT, that is about Rs 8,000 above market value. Compare the premium across several sellers before you trade.

Selling USDT: the gap works the other way

When you sell USDT for rupees, buyers pay below their asking price for new USDT. The difference between the best buy and sell offers is the spread. A freelancer paid 500 USDT, worth Rs 139,040.00 at market, should expect to receive a little less.

Trading safely on P2P

  • Trade only inside the platform, with escrow, and never release USDT before the rupees are in your account.
  • Check the payer's name matches the buyer's verified name.
  • Be wary of offers far above or below the rest of the market.
  • Keep screenshots and records of every trade.
  • Follow Pakistan's current rules. See crypto rules in Pakistan.
