Gwei and ETH gas fees explained in rupees
Every Ethereum transaction pays a fee called gas, priced in gwei. One gwei is 0.000000001 ETH. With ETH at Rs 754,881.53, a simple transfer at 5 gwei costs about Rs 79.26.
Gas, gas limit and gas price
- Gas measures the work a transaction needs. A plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas. Swapping tokens or minting NFTs uses much more.
- Gas price is what you pay per unit of gas, in gwei. Since Ethereum's 2021 London upgrade, it is made of a base fee set by the network plus an optional tip (priority fee).
- Gas limit is the most gas you allow a transaction to use. Unused gas is not charged.
The formula
Fee in ETH = gas used × gas price in gwei ÷ 1,000,000,000
Fee in rupees = fee in ETH × ETH price in rupees

Ways to pay less
- Send when the network is quiet; gas prices rise with demand.
- Use a layer-2 network (such as Arbitrum, Optimism or Base) if the receiver supports it. Fees there are usually a fraction of the main network's.
- For USDT, compare networks. The same USDT can cost very different fees on different chains.
- Do not set the gas limit too low: a transaction that runs out of gas fails but still pays for the gas it used.
